March Light Box-Along Project

While participating in the February Craft Social (a monthly Twitter event/gathering about chatting crafty), a few twitterers and I discussed the fact that winter has a lack of good natural light for photography, which is tough when you’re a blogger and your project photos depend on said natural light.

Light boxes were mentioned. Tutorials for light boxes were linked to. A light box-along was thought of. Interest was expressed. A few more times.

So here it is, the March Light Box-Along.

What do you do?
Make a light box. Post about it on your blog and on twitter with the hashtag #lightboxalong and if you have room #craftsocial.

What’s a light box?
A small box used to aid in photographing objects by providing uniform lighting.

How do I make one?
Follow one of these tutorials or get the basics from reading them and make one your own way.

Share your results:

  • Post on your blog
  • #lightboxalong and #craftsocial on Twitter
  • Add photos to the Light Box-Along group on Flickr
  • Comment here with your progress and links

Feel free to add links to other tutorials or your blog, or weigh in on any other aspect of the Light Box-Along in the comments.

I already made a light box, otherwise I’d definitely be joining in! I swear by my light box – it makes a huge difference to not have to be at the mercy of the weather and always be waiting for a sunny day to take decent photos. Here’s my blog post about mine: http://www.planetjune.com/blog/light-tent-for-better-product-photography/

Definitely want to participate in this. Hubby made one, but says he wants to make another. I’ll just use the old one. Not waiting for him. There might be a conflict with the grow lights that will be going up this week, though. We’ve got those do-hicky-thing light fixtures like in the pic above, but their first use is for veggies. Will there be photography tips and techniques along the way this month?

@planetjune, thanks for linking to your project – you did a great job on it and really demystified the process!

@Ramona, I look forward to seeing yours, and good idea – i’ll see what I can do about photography tips & techniques! I have a few things I could write about!

I’ve actually been pestering my hubby to make me a good lightbox lately. I want one made with hinges so that it can fold up and be put away. I also got a plain white window shade to use for a backdrop.

I’m hoping and praying it will get done this weekend! It’s been so hard to do any food blogging, because I only cook in the evening when it’s dark out. Crafts are easier because I can do them anytime.

Great idea, Heather! I’ll play along! :)
