I was in art school during the latter part of the 80s. The marker set I needed for one of my classes cost over $200. My junker car had cost $500, just to give you an idea of how much money that was to me.
I asked the art supply store if they did layaway, which was not unusual at that point. It took me a couple of months to pay off my marker kit, but I’m not sure that I would have been able to purchase it any other way. After all, I didn’t get my first credit card until I was 23 years old!
